Your Child’s Primary Care Practitioner (PCP)
When your child joins Keystone First – CHIP, you choose a primary care provider (PCP) for your child. Your child’s PCP oversees their health care. Your child’s doctor is responsible for taking care of your child’s health and, when necessary, arranging care for your child from other health care providers.
When your child becomes a Keystone First – CHIP Enrollee, it is important to make an appointment with your child’s PCP right away. Your child should see their PCP for regular checkups.
How do I choose a PCP for my child?
There are different kinds of providers who can be PCPs, including:
- Family practice and general practice doctors, who treat adults and children
- Pediatricians, who treat children from birth to age 21
- Some certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs).
If this PCP is new for your child, call your child’s old PCP and ask that your medical records be sent to their new PCP. It is important for your child’s new PCP to know your child’s medical history.
How can I get in touch with my child’s PCP?
You can call your child’s PCP for medical problems 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Remember:
- It is important to be on time for your child’s appointment.
- If you are going to be late or need to cancel your child’s appointment, call the PCP's office ahead of time and let them know.
- Try to give the PCP's office at least 24 hours notice if you need to change your child’s appointment or you may be charged for the appointment.
How do I change my PCP?
Go to Find a Provider, which will help you find a PCP in the Keystone First – CHIP network. Then call Enrollee Services at 1-844-472- 2447 (TTY 711) to request the change.
